It is thought that shorter days and less daylight trigger chemical changes in the brain, leading to symptoms of SAD. The risk of SAD increases with age and is more common in women. Here are some ways that may help folks to not feel as down during winter months.

Get More Light. Natural light is the best option, so if possible get outside or spend time by a window everyday. You can also use artificial light therapy, there are many inexpensive light boxes available that mimic natural light. Try using them while you have your morning coffee or breakfast, or for the first 15 minutes at your desk in the morning.

Reframe Winter. If you dread the colder, darker days that come with this season, it can help to shift your mindset. Find a winter sport or activity you love so that you look forward to this time of year. Think of this time in the year as a special season for more rest, self reflection, and recharging. For example you could make a list of great new books to read, create goals and do visioning or planning for the coming year, or prioritize selfcare rituals regularly. Schedule in a massage, yoga and mindfulness classes, or dates to catch up with friends. Basically, put extra effort into making time for things you can look forward to.

Get Professional Support. Seeking professional therapy, anti-depressant medications, and or supplements may help. Reach out to your healthcare provider if you think this is the case.

A forest covered in snow at the winter

Seasonal Effective disorder, or SAD, is a type of depression that occurs during certain seasons of the year—most often fall or winter.
